When Sergei Diaghilev, the most colourful personality of the early Western European art scene, learns that his mother is dying, he wants to travel to her immediately, but in his homeland Russia he is threatened with arrest and the death penalty. Early in the morning of 19 August 1929, insomnia, illness and despair drove him to his favourite beach in Venice. There he relives his extravagant life of omnipotence and defeat in the service of art.
